Savannah, GA

Part II, May 2011
To Savannah……….
We stopped first at a small country store with a big sign that read “ Today’s Fresh Baked Pies, Peach, Pecan, Apple and Blueberry” . It was a quaint little store with all types of jelly, canned vegetables, and candy for sale.
Our next stop was the Frampton Plantation House. The grounds looked like something from a movie. There were beautiful trees with Spanish moss hanging from the branches. We did the little tour inside and found that several movies were filmed in the Low Country area: Forrest Gump filmed in Oglethorpe Square, The Prince of Tides, and recently The Last Song on Tybee Island. I
We arrived in Savannah, and we found our hotel easily. We were across the road from the River Front Street. Perfect location! We walked down to the water front and looked at all of the shops. We found the candy stores: Pralines, Turtles and Taffy. That night (Monday) we ate dinner at Lady and Sons, Paula Dean’s restaurant. We waited maybe 30 minutes. The food was good.
The next day (Tuesday) we walked and walked, and it was very hot. We found a solution after lunch; Carrie and I went to the pool to swim and drink beer and Melissa and Betty went to the room to rest and watch tv. Later we got dressed and went to the Pink House for dinner. It is really pink. It was by far the best, and the most expensive food we had on the trip. It was an old antebellum home with the restaurant on the first and second floor with a bar on the basement floor.
Our choices were Shrimp-N-Grits, Shrimp Scallops Fettuccine, Pork Medallions, Big Pork Chop, Fudge Pecan Pie Alamode, Praline cup with Ice cream with Mango Citrus Puree with Berries.
Warehouse was a fun bar with very cold beer.
The City Market which was a street with restaurants and shops on each side provided free music each night and was a great place to hang out with a statue of Johnny Mercer, Marilyn Monroe, etc..
While sightseeing, we saw so many scenes from the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The statue of the girl from the movie is now in a museum because tourists were chipping away at the statue. We also visited the following locations or read about them:
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist erected in 1873
Old Savannah Cotton Exchange
First African Baptist Church
Independent Presbyterian Church
The beautiful fountain
The cemetery
The Six Pence Pub- Ghost Tour
Statue of John Wesley
St. Vincent’s Academy
Lowell Mason
Birthplace of Masonry
Armstrong Junior College
Dr. WM. A. Caruthers – novelist
Pulaski Monument
Jane Cuyler
Johnny Mercer
First Girl Scouts Headquarters in America
Salzburger Monument of Reconciliation
Comer House/ Jefferson Davis
And etc……
Tuesday night at 11:00- a hearse pulled up by our hotel for the Ghost Tour. We had to wait for about 15 minutes on another couple to arrive at the meeting spot. Our first stop was down the hill on River Front for a drink. As we were leaving, the guide stopped to explain to use about the statue of the Waving Lady which waved a piece of cloth to welcome the ships in to port. I noticed an older man standing behind the shrubs peaking over the top listening to us. Carrie started taking to him, but he did not want his picture taken. We think he must have been wanted for something because he was adamant about no picture! After we left River Front, we started on the tour stopping by several houses and telling us the stories of ghost sightings.
-Romantic ghost was seen by daughter-in-law and maid sliding down the banister coming by to get his wife.
-Husband’s infidelity with wife’s maid and friend causes his wife and lover to die. Lover murdered- her ghost still lingers.
- House is still not lived in because two young girls were murdered while their parents left to go to a party.
-Pirate restaurant and hotel- Robert Louis Stevenson frequent visitor.

While on the tour we stopped at Six Pence Pub; this is the pub where Julie Roberts peers in the window at her husband having dinner with another woman in the movie Something to Talk About. We arrived at the hotel and that is when Carrie and Melissa asked a police officer about the cat on the ledge. ( They thought it was a real cat; it was probably the fourth floor of the hotel.) He replied, “Have you been drinking?” In Savannah that is an easy question to answer. Of course, I stayed outside after the tour to smoke, and the hotel locked the doors, and I had no key. After a short panic, I got in the hotel.
Wednesday morning, we asked the parking attendant how to get to Tybee Island. He told us direction and then he said if you cannot find it keep going. We jumped in the car and headed to Tybee Island which is referred to as Savannah’s beach.
Tybee Island is an old historic island with shops leading down to the beach. There was ahuge pavaillon that we enjoyed. The main attraction was a senior citizen outing where the ladies started dancing to the music. There were also birds that were trying to get food, and it made us feel as if they were attacking birds. We walked on the beach. But it was not the white sands of Florida but a dark murky beach without blue water. We are spoiled to Destin! We went in one gift shop, and this lady told us all about the filming of The Last Song. She talked about where the house was that they used for filming and how half of the island was shut down during filming and that it took a long time to film the carnival scene. Now they have volley ball tournaments on the island. She gave us directions to the house, and we drove down and took pictures. It was a beautiful spot on the beach with better sand, and it was noticeable where the sea turtles hatched out.
We leave and head back. We take a wrong turn and enjoy the scenic view. After the island, Betty Ann was the official t-shirt queen: Paula Deen, Savannah, and Science Museum. She also taught us some sign language. Melissa was the best student.
Our last night was spent walking the River Front and eating at Fiddlers Crab House. I had the best Oysters Rockefeller that I have ever had. Melissa bought a pink charm to represent our trip and the Pink House. We headed back a little early the last night because we knew we had a long trip home.
Lee called his mom last that night and talked forever. He said, “ Mama, I am scared.” He was worried about his brother who was safe in a storm shelter with the Mitchell’s. Melissa called and talked to Dallas while she was gone. Yes, the dog. Carrie called to check on Mattie. Jade called to inform me that I had a new grand dog, Tuck.
We had a wonderful trip, and we met some very nice friendly people.
Key words from the trip:
Fiber pills
Knee in ass
Crab legs
Stinky
We arrive home safe and sound and begin planning our next trip.
When I pull in my drive way, two big limbs have fallen from the pine tree out back. Lee was not joking when he said that the wind was very strong Wednesday night.
